On July 27, Finland celebrates Saints of Ephesus Day with “National Sleepy Head Day.” Called Unikeonpaiva, the tradition is for each family to awaken the last person asleep in the house that morning by either throwing them into a lake or bay or to throw water over them while they are still in bed. The day is supposed to honor the memory of seven Christian men threatened with martyrdom for their faith in the third century, but instead has turned into a sort of lighthearted national water fight.
