Priesthood and Professionalism

1 Introduction [p.1] 2 Why Priesthood is not a profession? [p.1] 2.1 Profession Vs Vocation to Priesthood [p.2] 3 Why Then Professionalism? [p.5] 3.1 Demand on Today´s Priesthood [p.5] 3.2 The Illusion of Omniscience and Omnipotence [p.6] 3.3 Manifestations of Unprofessionalism [p.7] 4 Clash of Interests [p. 12] 5 Conslusion [p.14] Selected Reference [p.17] The term Professionalism with reference to any discipline normally has positive connotations such as expertise, adeptness, skill, proficiency, mastery, dexterity and competence. But Professionalism with reference to priesthood takes negative if not derogatory connotations such as just fulfilling ones duties, disinterestedness in ones ministry, lack of commitment to ones call and much more. Why should this be so? We have always been taught and have learnt that priesthood is not a profession, so the clergy should shun from any professional attitude in their ministry. While acknowledging the validity of the argument that priesthood cannot be treated just like any other profession, this paper seeks to point out that a priest at the same time cannot afford to be unprofessional in his operations be it in his dealing with people or in the administration of an institute or in teaching in a seminary or in running a parish.
