TEMPLES IN THE MIST, TIKAL GUATEMALA
The climb up the slippery ancient stonework still partially covered in vegetation is tiring. On the way up even in the dim pre dawn light your senses are bombarded. The thick smell of the plant life competes with the noises from the jungle around you. The sharp cries of the Toucans seem to carry on a conversation with screeches of the howler monkeys. Above them all is the throaty growl of a jaguar, or maybe its just your imagination.

Che Guevera stayed in room 21, according to Mario. His brother who was working here at the time confirmed this. That room was available the night I stayed there, and I considered it. However the bathroom was out of service. I took creature comfort over a sense of history and took another room. The next day I found out they moved Ches bed to room 10 several years back.

SLEAZY YES BUT STILL INTERESTING AND FUN, PUERTO BARRIOS GUATREMALA
Both my copies of Lonely Planet and Rough Guide said to give Puerto Barrios a miss. Its a sleazy port city on the Caribbean coast, best used to transit through as fast as possible going from Punta Gorda Belize to Honduras or vice versa. Naturally after reading that I knew I had to spend the night there.
