The Psychological Effects of the Israeli Occupation and Cultural Patriarchy on Women in Gaza

The purpose of this paper is to investigate and illustrate how the restrictions of the Israeli Occupation imposed on Palestinians in Gaza effect Palestinian women"s mental and physical health. More specifically, I will examine the stress and anxiety caused by the limitations of the Israeli Occupation in addition to the restrictions of the culturally patriarchal society of Gaza. I will address the psychological ramifications and harsh effects of the violence that Palestinian women are subjected to daily from the Israeli army. In addition, I will examine some causes for the increase in domestic violence and the implications of domestic violence on women"s psychological health.

Never Plain nor Easy

In 1747 Hannah Glasse published The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy the first English language cookbook for homemakers rather than chefs. Since that time thousands of cookbooks have promised to turn harried wives and mothers into domestic goddesses. In the 19th century Cookbooks helped formally working class women fit into the growing middle class. New immigrant women to Canada and the United States read cookbooks in order to assimilate into their new countries. Early cookbooks were much more than just a collection of recipes. They also included advice on laundering, child care, house keeping, healing and medicine. These early Martha Stewarts believed women were intelligent and capable but that the best use of their talents was in the domestic realm. Running a household was and still is a complex endeavour. The domestic cookbook championed the importance of domestic middle class life and the woman s role.
