Most Americans believe the United States has never suffered plagues of locusts. In actuality, a swarm consisting of trillions of Rocky Mountain locusts devastated farms from Colorado to Missouri in 1875. Government and private efforts could not stop them. Locusts form swarms and begin migrating when drought diminishes their food supply. Eventually, rains returned and the swarms ended.
