Writer Biography

Mark Mays is a freelance journalist and law school graduate from Nashville, TN. He has a quarter century of experience in the legal field, politics, academics and 16 of those years working as an author. Mark wrote and published editorials, short fiction and poetry before graduating law school and clerking for a State Supreme Court Justice. After several years working national political campaigns and as a legislative attorney, he embarked on chasing his love of writing. His first hit was a cover story for the Nashville Scene, an alt.weekly for which he was a Contributing Writer for several years before becoming a music writer for the Tennessean in Nashville and the editor of the urban section of the paper’s (now defunct) music blog.

After taking some time away from writing while working as an Appeals Hearing Officer, Mark has been writing for various online publications on men’s lifestyle, sports and entertainment. He continues to assist clients with legal writing, including authoring content for attorney websites. In August 2016, Mark’s essays on Japanese film will be included in The Encyclopedia of Japanese Horror Films to be published by Rowman and Littlefield.

Mark is a proud graduate of the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, where he played varsity football and received an academic honor. He earned his J.D. from the University of Tennessee College of Law. He attended the National Minority Editorial Writers’ Seminar, sponsored by the AEW.
