Mel Rowland is a part-time freelance writer and full-time adult education teacher living in Virginia. She writes about a wide variety of subjects—from education and criminal justice to lifestyle topics like life insurance, fitness, and nomad living. Her writing has a straightforward, approachable tone and is grounded in real-world experience.
Before working in adult education, Mel taught life skills in a correctional facility, which shaped her understanding of the need for criminal justice reform. She holds a Master’s degree in Special Education from the University of Kansas and brings that perspective into her work—always aiming to make complex topics clear and accessible.
When she’s not teaching or writing, Mel enjoys taking the train to Washington, D.C. or heading to New York City for a Broadway show. (The Outsiders is her recent favorite.) She’s also a big reader. Some of her favorite authors include Tommy Orange, Fredrik Backman, Laura Love Hardin, and Timothy Snyder.
Mel takes on freelance projects that benefit from strong research, a natural voice, and a writer who understands how to connect with everyday readers.
