Enabling Private Messaging

I am a member of many discussion forums, and I find private messaging to be incredily useful.

I was wondering if there are any plans to enable private messages on the CC forums? If not, why?

We have the ability to PM through the author contact system already. Spam is already a big problem in the forum.

The only problem with that is not everybody's forum name is the same as their author name. I also think PMing would be handy, but I certainly wouldn't want to be barraged with spam.
