...I did not know one could be paid so much for writing! I was looking in the recently sold category, and there is an article there that has been sold for $1315, named CS Filetonic Invoice May 2010. Out of my few years of doing this off and on, I have not seen one article sold for that much. It was a private request, but are articles sold for this much common?

That wasn't one article. The filetonic sales are a private request a few authors have that are really a bunch of articles bundled together from throughout the month. But, if you applied a similar principle to writing dozens of articles in a month, you would see your sales numbers jump.
