Re: Sold Articles in the "Writing Idea" Section

That's just the most recently sold list. If you check it throughout the day, you'll see that it changes. Also, some sales, such as those that are paid with a check, don't even appear on that list because the actual "sale" took place a few days before the "transaction" completed. ...

Re: Alternatives to CC

Lifetime earnings at Yahoo(Associated Content) doing upfronts and page views with 200+ articles on the site since 2006 -- somewhere in the $2K range, maybe even $3K but that's about it. Lifetime earnings at CC from 20006 ---> add a whole bunch of zeros to that. Honestly, I think the whole revenue sh...

Re: Proofreading and Editing Guides

I believe Yahoo has a free version of its stylebook online.

For reference books, I generally prefer a real book. Seems like if its right there on my desk, I'll reach for it.

Re: Fifth Rejection : All I ask for is consistency...

The editors don't go through each article line by line once they start seeing errors. They point out what they might have noticed initially but that's no guarantee that there aren't other errors that could trigger another rejection. Frustrating I know, but it's not practical to perform a line-by-lin...

Re: Proofreading and Editing Guides

Wow, Hodges' Harbrace Handbook is $100 bucks on Amazon. I've not used it personally, maybe because it's $100 bucks. For the money, I'd buy the following: Strunk & White's The Elements of Style - a tiny book and a must for any writer (make sure to get the most current edition possible - this one ...

What SJHillman said. And Stephen King's book is awesome! Even my non-writer husband who hates discussions about writing enjoyed it.

Re: What's Selling on Constant Content?

You've seen the top ten categories list, checked out the popular searches, and know that certain topics are in demand and likely to sell – now what? Now it's time to brainstorm article ideas! This is my favorite part because you never know what's going to capture your imagination. Let's start by rev...

Re: Have Not Received Client's Request

I believe that CC manually approves requests just as they do with articles, so there's often a delay between when the client says a request was made and when it appears in your list of requests.

Re: Parenthesis vs commas

Noah Lukeman's book, A Dash of Style, comes to mind. He said something along the lines of parenthesis being more like a whisper than commas. When deciding between which of the two to use, commas or parentheses, I often think of this and imagine whether or not I want the aside to come across as addit...

Re: Grammar Blocks

I almost always see and use backyard as one word when referring to that outdoor space in the back of the house. My trusty dictionary (Merriam-Webster 11th Edition / Collegiate) also uses backyard as one word for both the noun and adjective form. Here's the online definition from Merriam-Webster: htt...

Re: Hugh is new

Hi Hugh - welcome to CC. In my experience, five 500-word articles on tightly focused topics will do better than one 2500-word article covering those topics in depth -- at least here on CC. Naturally, some exceptions exist, but for getting started here, I'd recommend shorter, tightly focused pieces. ...

Re: Disappointed with Constant Content

What Constant said. Until you try CC for yourself, you can't really judge it. Some writers swear by it (I've done well here and appreciate CC and the doors it has opened for me tremendously); others swear about it (I know others who have struggled or don't like the risk involved). You have two choic...

Re: What are you writing about?

Great idea for a thread. I've been asked to write about Europe's upcoming privacy regulations in the next few weeks. Even here in the U.S., I suspect that with Facebook's ongoing intrusions and the recent brouhaha surrounding Instagram's now-aborted idea of using users' photos will continue to promp...

Re: Rejection of "Which Tablet Will You Buy This Christmas"

Since you have a lot of accepted articles, you have the basics mastered. It sounds like the editors want you to fine-tune your skills and take your writing to the next level. One of the things I love about CC is that while we may be content to stay where we are, the editors often prompt us to look d...
