Subject-verb agreement, New York Times Approach

Hi, I have a question: When referring to an institution, does CC prefer strict adherence to subject-verb agreement or is the NYT approach OK? For example, NYT approach (to avoid awkward references): Purdue University's admission requirements include multiple criteria. They look for a 4.0 GPA, blah, ...

Re: Short Term Housing Question

What is Dr. Kristi's strategy? I see she writes short articles and sells usage rights for a low price. Anything else?

Transplanted New Yorker Living in the South

Hi all! I joined Constant Content this past week. I've posted two articles so far, one came back because my font was wrong. I'm still waiting to hear about the other. I'm nervous about resubmitting article number one, because when I went back and checked it was indeed saved in the proper font (TNR 1...

Re: Hello From New York!

Hi Sharion, Case Reynolds, here. Another newbie joins the ranks! Below, I posted the list of tips you gave. Thanks for them. Question: Are these items that caused rejections? Obviously, I fear the three rejections and you're out rule. 1. Beware of repeating yourself 2. Make sure the issues you bring...

Re: Brians' Errors

Yes, there are two exceptions that I know of, off hand: You can effect change, and you can have a flat affect, but most of the time the affect is a verb, effect is noun rule will work.

Re: Brians' Errors

Another way to remember affect and effect: Affect is the verb; effect is the noun.

Re: "And" in a Series - Help?

I would add that including “and” before the last item in a list is a point of style. Speaking from a poetics point of view, the word “and” before the last item in a list is usually an unstressed syllable, which lends musicality to a line that would otherwise have an emphatic or harsh beat. If the wr...

Re: How to Sell More Article Part II

I love the geeky stuff, too. It's not someone gushing and acting like a sycophant, and it's not someone complaining. It's just cold, hard--and honest--facts. Very instructive. Thanks Celeste.

Re: Rejected for Following Directions?!

Thank you for letting me know. I'm not sure why it didn't save in the proper format, but I will try again. So, was that the only formatting error? Now I have more related formatted questions: Should I leave the title and my byline on the article or omit them, given that the information is entered in...

Re: Rejected for Following Directions?!

Hi--My first article was just rejected with an editorial note to follow all formatting guidelines. I submitted the article in 12 Pt Times New Roman and left a space between each paragraph. I thought I saved it as a .doc file, but was having trouble. Maybe it went through as a .docx file. Would that ...

Re: Must-Read Resources - New Authors: Start Here

How long does it take to review an article? I read in the official information that it takes three days, but elsewhere in the forum I've seen comments indicating that it can take many weeks. I'm just wondering what to expect, realistically. Is there only one editor reading all the articles? If so, a...
