"Latest Content Added" section

Just wondering how the home page "latest content added" section works. I've noticed that when my articles have shown in this section, they tended to get a lot of views from the exposure. I've also noticed that many of the articles up there right now have been there for quite some time, at the very least a few days. That would indicate to me that this section doesn't actually show the latest content added, but instead has some sort of criteria for what gets featured there other than just being the "latest".

Can anyone shine some light into what makes this section tick and why some articles seem to stick here for long periods of time even though they're no longer the actual latest content added? Is there some strategy to being featured in this section?

I understand it is the latest additions in categories, so if some categories don't have new additions, the last ones will stay there longer.
