Question about Product Suggestions

Post by cmcmahon66 »

How specific can one be in doing an article about gift ideas or specific products for a reader to seek out? I am thinking specifically at the moment in terms of a Father's Day gift ideas article where I have a list of specific, currently available items. Can the specific product be mentioned or just a general type recommended? If a specific item is recommended should a link be included for purchase? It seems like the target audience for this type of article would be looking for a gift suggestion and would prefer to click on an item that strikes a chord with them rather than have to hunt it down based on a general description.

Try to avoiding dating your articles, if possible. You always want to write it so that if it doesn't sell in time for Father's Day 2013, it will still be relevant for Father's Day 2014. Try to say "a new laptop" instead of "a Lenovo Thinkpad T60".

Of course, if you're talking entirely about specific items then you may not be able to do the article you have in mind without dating it to this year. Links to specific items can get quite long, and CC doesn't allow hyperlinks anyway, so you may be better off listing the item and the website. For example, "Big Bob's SuperDrill Deluxe 25X is available from SuperStore.com". It's enough information that the reader could easily go to SuperStore.com and copy the item name into that store's search box.

One thing to always remember is that your customer is NOT the reader. Your customer is the person who is buying your article, and they usually don't want people to click off their page right away, as they generate money mostly through ad revenue. Thus you want your article to be something that people will read in its entirety before clicking off the page.

I agree with SJ.

It gives the customer more freedom. Referring back to SJ's example:

A Lenovo Thinkpad T60
vs
A new laptop

If the customer has an article about laptops, they can easily link to it in the second example.

He's also right in saying, if it doesn't sell this year and you are too specific, it will not be as applicable next year.
