The em-dash

I use em-dashes in my work from time to time for emphasis. For those of you that do the same, have you noticed a rule/preference with the editors regarding spaces on either side of the em-dash versus no spaces? I don't generally use spaces and I don't recall that ever being a problem, but it came to my attention recently that the standard for AP style uses spaces. Although that seems to be the "rule," (perhaps it has changed?) I can't recall ever seeing it done. I'm not sure which method to use, and I was hoping one of you had already overcome that hurdle and might know the right answer. Thanks!

The extended writer guidelines point to this as a resource:

Was recently informed by an editor CC doesn't allow hyphens (-) at the beginning of a paragraph, but bullet points (ยท) are to be used instead. New editors might be tightening up the punctuation rules??
