Word count not updating?

I submitted an article last night. Today, I edited it while it was still in the queue. After I saved the changes, I noticed that the word count stayed the same. Yet I know I added about 200 words to it. Is this normal? Does this mean we have to manually update the word count when we edit an article? Or does this get updated when the editor approves it?
