Re: Is it okay to use similar titles?

Well here's one way to look at it... what if the same customer bought "Things To Do in NY in Feb" and "Things To Do in NY in Winter" and realized there were large chunks of the exact same text? How would the buyer's readers react? That's why we say it is always best to change up ...

Re: February 2011 Learn a New Trick Writing Challenge

I'm in!!!! I'm doing 2 tricks. I've always wanted to use HARO, and I think I finally have the article series to do it with.... My husband is doing a job search leaving the military. I have an entire article series in the works on the 21st Century Job Search. I have statistics from .gov sites, but if...

For those of you who do not have Word, Openoffice.org. It's free and let's you save as a .doc It also have spellcheck and grammar check and you can even tell it you want to check fro American versus British English. It also does spreadsheets, databases, presentations, and drawings. It looks very sim...

Re: Bylines with Pen Names

There's an added bonus to using either your real name or a pen name with a recognizable picture (a very successful author here does the later). You can claim the work on a resume! One of the reasons I kept up my writing even when my husband and I didn't need the income is because I left the workforc...

Re: Is it okay to use similar titles?

I agree with Celeste that while you COULD just copy and paste if you're doing usage only across the board, that would weaken your product overall. First, it sounds like there are items that are ONLY available in a certain month. For example, in my area the Strawberry Festival is always in May. Putti...

Re: I'M BAAACCCCKKKK!!!

Well, there's now a team of editors. The quality of article writing has risen thanks to the new influx of writers and editors. :) Prices aren't quite the same as last year, still recovering there. Most of the other changes are for new writers, like you can't write to a public request until you have ...

Re: Mistakes, and how to avoid them

And THEN Melissa there are the glorious exceptions. The root word Confer. The stress is on the last syllable, by itself. kuhn-FER And when you add -ing, you double the last r Conferring. BUT, when you add the suffix -ence, which begins with a vowel, we happen to pronounce that word differently, wher...

Re: Mistakes, and how to avoid them

I don't know if I posted this here or not, but the way my stepson is being taught spelling is with bizarro rules, not a spelling list. His notes, for 5th grade, no kidding say this: Doubling Rule Double the last consonant in a word IF -the suffix begins with a vowel - the last syllable gets the stre...

Re: Fiction

Wow, cool resource!!! I use Project Team Beta for my Twilghted.net stor (it's fan fiction though, not original). I sent a chapter of my original work to my regular beta, and it was NOT well received. I can't blame her. I'm doing much better on my fan fiction though, everyone loves that. Up to 1,000 ...

Re: Mistakes, and how to avoid them

That must be a new thing. I was taught noun ends in s, it's s' I read a few resources and it looks like NOW the rule is s's for singular nouns as long as the pronunciation isn't awkward "Achilles's" versus "Achilles'" Okay, so who decides if the pronunciation is awkward? Those re...

Re: Homeschooling....

Thanks for the vote of confidence Emma. We aren't going with homeschooling right now. Kiddo is doing much better in school work, and I have figured out some great supplements. For math, on days he doesn't have any math homework, he has to raise 1,000 grains of rice on freerice.com in the 2 math cate...

Re: Mistakes, and how to avoid them

::cringes:: I once wrote a 5 page paper about how "they" used in the singular is becoming common usage to resolve the issue of gender neutrality. It chronicled how grammar has changed through the ages, for example a crowd of 99 people, 98 women and 1 man, in many romantic languages gets th...

Re: Brain freeze!

Yes, writing crap and making it gold is so MUCH easier these days. Move paragraphs around with a few clicks. Ctrl-R to change a term to a better keyword phrase. Imagine if we were still in the typewriter age! I've been reading a ton of Pride and Prejudice fan fiction lately, most set in the Regency ...

Re: Homeschooling....

With K-12, you can start at any time. Celeste, there are California public schools available online. We aren't going with the online schooling option at this time because of things we've learned about the other household, we don't want to give the opportunity for stepson to visit longer there, at th...
