Writer Biography
Jen Sullivan is a farmer, fiction writer, speechwriter, Zen practitioner, political operative, federal budget analyst, public policy director, and novelist residing in the Shenandoah Valley with her husband and more scraggly chickens than they can count. She received a BA in Politics, Economics, Rhetoric, and Law from University of Chicago in 1984 and an MA in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from Oxford University in 1986. In 2017, she received an MFA in creative writing from Queens University of Charlotte, where she served as an assistant fiction editor for Qu Magazine. From 1987 to 2007, Jen worked in D.C. at various jobs (economist, legislative assistant, subcommittee staff director, legislative director) for senior Democratic Senators. There, she wrote speeches, white papers, policy memos, correspondence, press releases, op-eds, and campaign material including radio and television ad scripts, debate prep material, and fund raising appeals. During that time, Jen also developed a writing course for congressional employees, which she continued to teach in the Senate and at D.C.-based nonprofits after 2007. After 2007, with her husband, Jen also built, and did all publicity (including a popular website) for a multiproduct sustainable farm with hundreds of clients in DC and the Valley. She founded Active Voice, a firm providing editing and speechwriting for clients such as the Federal Trade Commission, the UN Foundation, small businesses doing business with the government, and political campaigns. Jen's short fiction has appeared in The Jellyfish Review, Word Riot, Citron Review, Jersey Devil Press, Richmond Magazine, and WhiskeyPaper, was recognized in the New Millennium Writing Awards ,and won the James River Writers Best Unpublished Novel of 2017 contest.
