Now that you have been working as a licensed massage therapist for a few years, are you looking at other locations in hopes of a more lucrative practice or just for a change of scenery? If so, you need to take a close look at the requirements for licensure in the state that you are considering and compare those requirements with your credentials.

Since massage licensing is regulated at a state rather than at a national level, each state sets its own standards for licensure. There can be substantial differences in the required levels of education from state to state. The National Certification Board for Massage and Bodywork has developed guidelines for certification that have been utilized for the licensing procedure in thirty-two states. However, several of these states have additional requirements. The NCBTMB guidelines call for a minimum of five hundred hours of instruction at an approved school and a passing score on a standardized exam. States that have adopted these regulations include Arizona, Connecticut, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Rhoda Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, West Virginia, and Virginia. Keep in mind that although these states do not require further educational hours, many of them have other requirements. North Carolina, for example, has a somewhat convoluted process involving numerous documents that can take months to wade through and Nevada allows each municipality to require a business license from each therapist, even those who work in resorts and spas.
