Overcoming Annoying Behaviors at Work

Summary:
This blog entry presents strategies for dealing with workers who take credit for your work, make dirty jokes, or let each year pass without giving you a raise.
Details or Sample:
Some people at work are so annoying! This blog entry concerns pet peeves common to the workplace and how you might undo them with coworkers, subordinates, and supervisors.

So you’ve probably been annoyed by people you work with as well as by clientele of your employer. Perhaps your company has got one or more policies that make no sense to you. As an employee of the company and not an owner, you may feel like you have little input into problems in the workplace. Sometimes problems continue because nobody speaks up, and status quo remains status quo.

The first pet peeve is the coworker who works with you on projects and attempts to take credit for your ideas. If you don’t like confrontations, you might have let this problem persist for a long time. The problem with never saying anything is that one day you might burst and do something to hurt your job. Here is a simple resolution. Talk with the person directly. Be subtle at first. If she doesn’t take the hint, be more assertive. If the problem continues, you can look for the opportunity to bring it up to your supervisor. When you are asked to work with her again, politely ask to work independently on your own aspect of the project or be assigned another partner.

The second pet peeve concerns that coworker who always makes dirty jokes during work or in the employee lunchroom. You’ve listened to his remarks too many times, and you’ve finally decided that enough is enough. How do you bring it up when you and everyone else have put up with his antics for so long? Try to find a time when other people aren’t present so that you don’t embarrass him. Or you can leave an anonymous note on his desk asking him to tell cleaner jokes at work. Whatever approach you take, you have the right to be surrounded by people conducting themselves as professionals.

The third pet peeve is the boss that lets each annual review come and go without giving you a raise. The only way you ever get a raise is if you bring it up. This is another case of you letting things go without saying something.
