Danica Patrick: Breaking Records

Summary:
This article highlights the career of Danica Patrick. Includes achievements in karting, European racing, Toyota Atlantic Series, and Indy 500.
Details or Sample:
On July 2nd, 2005, just one month after the Indianapolis 500, Danica Patrick became the 2nd female ever to win a pole position in the IRL IndyCar Series. She posted a fast lap of 214 miles per hour, beating teammates Buddy Rice and Vitor Meira.

Born on March 25,1982, Danica, who is a mere 23 years old, made her debut in racing twelve years ago. The daughter of a father who raced snowmobiles and a mother who worked as a mechanic, Danica began karting at the age of ten, and for the next five years won numerous championships in the World Karting Assocation. At the age of 16, Danica decided to tackle road racing and in 1998 entered the Formula Vauxhall Winter Series in England. She completed a full season of racing in 1999 and a year later finished second in the Formula Ford Festival in England, breaking a record for American drivers.

Danica raced in Europe until 2002, when she won the Toyota Pro Celebrity race in Long Beach. At this point, she signed a multiyear agreement with Team Rahal. During this year she also competed in five Barber Dodge Pro Series races. Her accomplishments in the past two years are impressive. In 2003, Danica finished sixth in te Toyota Atlantic Championship. She was the first woman to finish on the podium as the season began, and she ended the season with ten races in the top 10. A year later, Danica not only led the Toyota Atlantic series with 10 top-5 results, but she was also the only driver to complete all 417 laps. In Portland, she became the first female driver to win pole position. This was her first career pole position as well.

On May 29th, 2005, Danica became the fourth woman ever to race the Indianapolis 500. She led for 19 laps and, with only seven laps to go, was ahead of the pack. But a low fuel supply and threadbare tires caused her to drop back. Danica finished in fourth place, just a few seconds too late.
