“Superman Returns” (2006) takes up the tale of Superman five years after leaving the Earth to try to find out what happened to his native planet Krypton. It continues the tale of Superman, making a small reference to the final film that starred Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel, to let fans of the Superman films know that this is a continuation of an ongoing story – and not a remake.

The opening scene is as poignant as it is dramatic, with Clark Kent (played by Brandon Routh) stepping from a blazing meteor, bereft of his costume, to fall into the arms of his adoptive mother, Martha (Eva Marie Saint). The audience can’t help but feel sympathy for Mrs. Kent, who for the second time in her life has witnessed a ball of flame falling from the sky, and taking her boy into her home.

To say that “Superman Begins” requires a suspension of the viewer’s disbelief is a massive understatement. Superman is, after all, capable of incredible feats. In this film director Bryan Singer attempts to showcase some of those capabilities, starting with catching a falling 747 to bring it to a “gentle” crash landing in the middle of Yankee Stadium (and, as a consequence, saving Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) from yet another disaster); to carrying an entire island off the face of the Earth and hurling it into space, the special effects in “Superman Returns” are both remarkably believable as they are awe inspiring.
