On the Move: 10 Steps for a Successful Sea Change
|
Summary:
With the increasing pressures of modern life and urban living, more and more people are looking to change their lifestyles. This article suggests ten steps to ensure that the change is as trouble-free as possible. |
Details or Sample:
The faster and more stressful the modern world becomes, the more people think longingly of a complete change of lifestyle. Sometimes their sea change or tree change works like a dream come true, and sometimes it’s more of a nightmare. So what do you need to do to make sure leaving town is the right thing for you?
1. Be honest with yourself. Is this really what you want to do, or is your dream a reaction to a bad day, a bad week or even a bad year? Perhaps you’re overtired, overworked or suffering the pangs of loss in some way. Perhaps you’re tempted to make a dramatic gesture. Whatever the reason, would the problem be better solved some other way – a vacation? a new job? – rather than by taking such a life-changing step? Remember that wherever you go, you take yourself with you.
2. Don’t rush into it. What looks good this month may seem quite different when spring arrives – when you find a more agreeable job – when your mother-in-law moves to Florida. Take time to think what it is you really want to change about your life, and ask yourself whether a change of environment is necessary to achieve it.
3. Know where you want to go and why. Sticking a pin in the map is a recipe for disaster. Ask yourself exactly what you hope to get from your new home, and set about finding a place that suits your requirements environmentally, socially and financially. Check out your prospective community to make sure you won’t feel like a fish out of water, and that it provides the facilities that sooner or later you’ll find essential. The pretty town you enjoy on vacation may have a downside well hidden from visitors.
4. Do your sums. The most idyllic spot in the world will lose its appeal if you’re struggling to afford it.
5. Check out the employment opportunities in your field, or in any field where you’d be happy to work. Once again, happiness and hunger don’t mix.
6. If you’re lucky enough to be financially comfortable without working in your new environment, is there enough to do? You’ve left your previous leisure buddies behind, remember, and while spare time might seem like paradise from your present perspective, too much time with too little to occupy it can be as depressing as overwork.
7. Are you really prepared to move away from your present social circle? Can you imagine life without them? We all have support networks of one sort or another, and a complete change of lifestyle will inevitably cut you off from the one you have now. Providing you haven’t moved too far, friends may come to visit for a while, but they are still living the life you left behind. Once the novelty wears off, how many of them will drift away? And how much will you care?
