Customize your Windows Vista Taskbar

Summary:
Instructions on how to customize your Windows Vista Taskbar. This is the entire article, submitted for a public request.
Details or Sample:
The Windows Vista Taskbar sits at the bottom of your computer screen and helps you run programs and manage those that are running. Read on to find out how to make it more helpful than ever.

First, right-click on the Taskbar. Look at the menu that comes up. If there is a check-mark next to “Lock the Taskbar,” click on that to un-check it. You can lock it again later, but to make some changes it has to be unlocked.

Now right-click on it again and be sure there´s no check mark next to “Lock the Taskbar.” Click on “Properties.” A dialog box pops up that gives you lots of customization options. Auto-hide means it disappears when not in use. Sometimes it disappears and doesn´t come back, so if you check this, you probably want to check “Keep the taskbar on top of other windows” also. But if you like your taskbar to be always visible, un-check the autohide feature.

If you have trouble identifying which item on the taskbar is which, you can choose “Show window previews” which will show a thumbnail of each window when you hover over it.

By far the best option is the Quick Launch. This menu pops up so you can run your favorite programs quickly and without cluttering your desktop. Here´s how to customize it: First, enable it by choosing “Show Quick Launch” and then click on the “OK” button to close the Taskbar properties box. The Quick Launch is usually to the right of the Windows logo on the left-hand edge of the Taskbar. Take a look at it: it will have a couple of default icons, to get you started, usually Internet Explorer and Windows Mail. But you can add more: Drag any icon from the desktop to the Quick Launch and it will create a shortcut there (as long as your Taskbar is unlocked). You can move them around if you don´t like the order they end up in.

Your favorite program doesn´t have a desktop shortcut? You can make one. Just open the Programs section of the Windows Start menu and keep going till you see the program you want to use. Instead of clicking on it to launch it, right-click on it and you will see a menu. Choose “Create Shortcut.” If your computer is like mine, it will tell you you can´t create another shortcut on the menu, and ask if you want it on the desktop. Say yes. If it does create it on the menu, you can drag it from there to the desktop.

Once you have a shortcut on the desktop, you can drag it to your Quick Launch menu. Once you´ve done that, you can delete the shortcut on the desktop if you want. It won´t delete the program, it will just make your desktop less cluttered.

You can do lots of other things to the Taskbar or the Start Menu using the box that pops up when you right-click on the Taskbar and select “Properties.” Spend some time checking them out, you can always put things back the way they were if you don´t like them. I found I could make my Start Menu look more like the one I´m used to from Windows XP. Look under the Start Menu tab for other options. Or add a new Toolbar using that tab – you´ll be surprised how many options you have.
