Stick to Your Diet Even When Eating Out
by Deanna Lynn Sletten

Eating out is a fact of life today with everyone busy with work and family obligations. Unfortunately, eating out isn’t always conducive to eating a healthy diet. And if you are trying to lose weight eating out can be especially challenging. But there are some ways you can eat healthy and stick to your diet.

Portion Control

The first thing you need to remember is portion control. So many restaurant meals today contain much more food than one person should consume. Check to see if the menu offers a smaller portion of the meal you want. If not, ask the server to split the meal into two portions and wrap up one half for you to take home. This way you won’t be tempted to eat the entire meal and you will have a second meal to eat at another time.

Other ways to control portion are to:
• Order a children’s meal. You will get a smaller portion and a smaller price.
• Order off the appetizer menu. You won’t have to eat a full meal and maybe your dinner companion will help you by eating a few pieces too.
• Order a side or dinner salad instead of a large Chef salad. All the meat and cheese on the Chef salad will really weigh you down but a side salad will keep you feeling light. Remember to ask for the dressing on the side so you can control how much goes on it.
• Share a meal with your dinner companion. Whether it is your friend or your spouse you might both enjoy eating a smaller portion and the savings of ordering only one meal.

Fast Food

We all drive through our favorite fast food restaurant from time to time either out of cravings or necessity but that doesn’t mean your diet has to go out the window. Many fast food chains now offer healthier alternatives and most will prepare your burger or sandwich the way you want it. This helps in letting you cut out all the fattening accessories, like cheese and sauces, which pile on the calories. Here are a few tips on how to keep dieting while eating fast food:
• Choose a chicken meal over a beef one. Chicken is usually leaner and has less fat and less calories.
• Whatever meat you do choose have it broiled, baked or grilled instead of fried. This will lower the calorie count for you.
• Ask for your burger, chicken or fish sandwich without a bun so you cut out the carbohydrates.
• Have the burger, chicken or fish sandwich made plain so you can add your own sauces or forego them entirely.
• Choose a sub restaurant over a burger place. You have a lot more choices of low-calorie sandwiches there and can choose healthy toppings.

Staying on your diet shouldn’t be difficult even if you eat out often. By choosing appropriate servings and making a few adjustments you should still be able to keep the calories down while filling up.
