Sweating Too Much
|
Summary:
Many people suffer the embarrassment of heavy perspiration. And many suffer in silence, not realizing that this can be treated. This article discusses the two medical types of excessive sweating and what can be done about it. |
Details or Sample:
We all need to sweat. It’s how we regulate our body temperature in hot weather, when we are ill with a fever, or just taking exercise. But some people have abnormal levels of perspiration, up to five times more than average, and at any time of day. The medical name for this condition is hyperhidrosis.
According to the Philadelphia based International Hyperhidrosis Society, around 3 per cent of the world’s population suffer from this condition.
Usually the excessive sweating will only be in certain parts of the body. It might be the hands, feet, chest, groin, armpits, even the face, which will blush and be hard to hide. This is known as focal, or primary, hyperhidrosis and there is no known cause for it, although research indicates that it can be inherited.
Generalized hyperhidrosis is more unusual. This term is used where a person sweats more than is normal over the whole of the body. There are several possible causes of this. Each will be another medical condition, so it is often referred to as secondary hyperhidrosis. It can be a side effect of medication, or a symptom of another illness, such as diabetes, nerve damage, thyroid malfunction, heart problems or anxiety disorders. The condition should never be ignored and a doctor will always do a series of tests before diagnosis and treatment of the primary illness.
While the focal type of excessive sweating is not life threatening, it can cause great discomfort. In severe cases, many people find it so embarrassing that they cannot have a normal social life. They don’t mix with other people and only leave their homes when they have to, so can become very lonely and depressed. They may see themselves as unemployable, unable to go to a job interview or shake hands with anyone. Because they isolate themselves, they don’t realize that this is a treatable condition they share with millions of others.
