7 Things to Consider Before Getting a Pet
|
Summary:
Are you ready for a pet? This article outlines some of the things people should consider before taking the plunge. |
Details or Sample:
That cute kitty who keeps wandering up to your door? The puppy that your colleague is telling you that you’ll just love? How about the fish tank that your son’s best friend just offered him—for free? Should you open your home to a new pet? Here are some things to consider before you take the leap, so don’t buy the kibble just yet!
1. How much time do you spend at home? If you hold down a full-time job outside the home and have an active social life, then getting or dog or a cat is not a good idea. Dogs have to be taken out regularly, and see themselves as part of a pack. They are not solitary animals. While cats are more independent, try leaving a cat on it’s own for three days and see what happens to your plants and carpet. On the other hand, don’t.
2. How physically fit are you? Dogs can be very physically demanding. Controlling a large dog on a leash takes strength, especially if the dog is not well-trained. Also, dogs enjoy being walked, playing Frisbee and other active pursuits. If you do not enjoy being active, or are unable to keep up with the demands of an active animal, a dog is not for you.
3. Do you or anyone in your household have allergies? Contrary to popular belief, it is not the fur on an animal that causes allergies. Conversely, it is a protein in saliva that causes the allergic reaction. This is why so many people are allergic to cats, who frequently clean themselves. There are some breeds of cats and dogs that are less allergenic than others, however. For example, the poodle is a good choice for people who have a slight dog allergy but who still want a dog. Also, while a fish tank may seem like a good idea, if anyone has mold allergies, keep in mind that the humidity from the fish tank can increase mold problems in the household.
