The Top Three Cross Country Hiking Opportunities In The USA

When listing their interests and hobbies, many people claim that hiking is something they like to do. Hiking can mean different things to different people. Some people like to go out for a one to two mile walk in the woods and call it a day hike, others like to do a more demanding six to ten mile day hike, while others arenīt happy unless their hike is long enough in distance or time needed to complete that in includes at least one overnight stay. Whatever their motivations one personīs hike, though exciting to them, may not be exactly what another hiker is looking for. In fact, there are a great many hikers who embark on much bigger excursions. In the United States there are three big cross country hikes that attract the most extreme of these hikers. Hikers that tackle these routes are often referred to as "thru-hikers".

Hiking across the country by any of these routes takes not only outdoors skill and physical fitness, but it also takes good planning. Due to bad weather, some hikers only hike certain portions of the trail during certain times of the year and although they may complete the entire trail, they didnīt do it in order from beginning to end. To accomplish this type of hiking, which can take months, most hikers have to either be students, self-employed, or quit or take leaves of absence from their jobs. Logistical support is also often used by hikers on excursions such as these. Having family or friends mail packages with supplies in them to different towns on the route help to alleviate having to carry absolutely everything with them during the entire hike.

Located in the Western United States, the Pacific Crest Trail follows the Cascade Mountain Range in the north and the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in the south. The trail spans across the entire country with the southern end starting literally at the US border with Mexico and the northern end being situated inside Canada. The trail was officially completed in 1993, but had been used for decades before that. The lowest point of the trail is just above sea level which occurs at the crossing of the Columbia River on the Oregon-Washington border, while the highest point reached on the Pacific Crest Trail is over 13,000 feet at Forester Pass in the Sierra Nevada range. The trail itself is 2,650 miles in length from beginning to end and between the deserts of California and the snow covered peaks further north, anyone who treks it will experience a wide variety of temperature, climate, and scenery.
