Making Friends at College

Summary:
Making friends can be a difficult process when you are new to campus. This article advises how to make the process easier.
Details or Sample:
One issue with many incoming college students is that they find themselves in unfamiliar territory. They know absolutely no one and have no idea where anything is. One thing they don’t realize is that pretty much everyone is in the same situation.

Talking is the best way to find and meet new people. No one bites when you ask a question. Even if you are just walking somewhere, but are unsure, ask someone walking in the same direction. If you are lucky, they are going to the same place as you.

Don’t sit in the far back corner and then complain about how you don’t make any friends in class. Sit in the center of the room, or where there are a lot of people. Make some small talk about the class. (These tactics work best on the early days of the quarter or semester.)

Another way to meet new peeps is getting involved on campus. Any college has organizations or groups. Find at least one that interests you. Even if you choose not to be in that group, there will be the chance to engage in conversation with potential friends at these meetings.

It’s easy to forget that your neighbors could be prospective friends. Leave your door open to invite people to say hi or stop by and see what you are doing. Make your room an inviting and fun place to attract as well as entertain other students.

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t make any friends right away. It’s difficult to make new friends. Listen to the cliché: If at first you don’t succeed, try again. There’s nothing wrong with trying to find your place. College is a big place and it might take a while to find people who are similar to you. Keep a positive outlook and you are sure to rack up so many friends you will never have a dull moment!
