Top 15 Horror Movies of the 2000s (So Far)

 (Best Offer)
Summary:
This article is about the top 15 horror movies since 2000. This list includes details on all 15 movies with special focus on what makes them so special.
Details or Sample:
Any list of top horror movies is going to be controversial because horror movie fans tend to be very knowledgeable and passionate about their personal favorites. While this was a hard list to make, and many good movies failed to make it, here is a list of the top 15 horror films released so far this decade (2000-2007).

This has been a great decade for horror films, and these are the best of the group so far. As a side note: an obvious movie is off this list, which is "Shaun of the Dead." The reason for this is that the movie is more of a comedy or satire than a serious horror film. "Shaun" is an amazing movie, but it´s not a true horror flick, even with zombies.

So without further ado, here is the list:

#15 "Rose Red" (2002): Some pretty good movies have been made from Stephen King works recently, and "Rose Red" is one of them. "Rose Red" is a fantastic modern take on the classic haunted house story. The ingredients in this film are a group of psychics, a manipulative professor, and a purely evil house that feeds off psychic energy. Mix all of them together and the explosive result is "Rose Red."

#14 "Hostel" (2005): There are some very devoted fans who love this movie and will be mad that it´s ranked so low. Although this is a good horror movie, it´s not nearly as good nor as original as "Saw." This film came out after "Saw," and after another "Texas Chainsaw" remake/sequel, and in the end "Hostel" went for the gory gross out film. While there was plenty of gore it wasn´t imaginative enough or over the top enough with the gore to climb to the top of the mountain. This is a solid horror movie, but it´s not spectacular enough to rank any higher.

#13 "The Descent" (2005): This is another movie that has horror fans arguing vehemently with one another. Some horror fans absolutely love this movie, while others hate it. The British and American versions of this film have very different endings that can change the interpretation of the entire movie, with the ending of the American version the far more ambiguous of the two.

In this film several women descend into an unexplored cave, become trapped, and then become prey to the terrifying predators that live there. During the fight for survival, serious rifts form between several of the women, making the situation even worse. This leads to murder, and a strong climactic finish. The ending of the film is what causes most of the arguments between fans who loved this movie, and those who hated it.

#12 "The Ring" (2002): There have been a lot of fantastic horror movies coming out of Asia recently, and "The Ring" is a great example. In this movie there is a rumor about a video tape that kills anyone who watches it. This video tape turns out to be real and is haunted by a vengeful and vindictive girl ghost who died violently herself. As the bodies pile up, a mother´s race to save her son leads to a series of discoveries that keeps the plot moving to an intense ending. The end has a series of final chilling twists that M. Night Shamalyan could learn a thing or two from.

#11 "Dawn of the Dead - remake" (2004): This George Romero classic was remade for a modern U.S. and took the idea of running zombies from "28 Days Later," and ran with it. These zombies are strong, fast, and vicious - bringing the terror to an entirely new level. Slow zombies were scary enough en masse. Now that the undead can sprint, leap, and aggressively hunt on top of it, they become outright terrifying. The ending of the remake is very dark, and much closer to the spirit of the original ending that Romero intended for the original "Dawn of the Dead" before studio executives made him change it.

#10 "Ginger Snaps" (2000): It´s good to know that someone hasn´t given up on the dream of making a truly good werewolf movie. "Ginger Snaps" is a really good independent werewolf film from Canada. "Ginger Snaps" has it all: an interesting plot, great acting, and originality dealing with the werewolf myths. In this film werewolves can come out anytime, not just during a full moon! Forget silver and crosses and the other common myths - these werewolves play by completely different rules. This is an unusually well made horror flick and is definitely worth a watch!

#9 "Gin Gwai - The Eye" (2002): This is the original version of the film "The Eye," not the remake. This movie shows again how Asian horror films have really come into their own over the past several years and are now producing some of the best horror movies in the genre. This film follows a girl who can finally see after getting an eye transplant, but she begins to see ghosts, demons, and impending disasters that cause death. She fears a tragic result is inevitable, and a search for the donor leads to several startling discoveries and a thrilling ending that makes this film a modern horror classic.

#8 "The Mist" (2007): This movie is based on a very popular Stephen King novella, and it delivers. A strange mist appears in a Maine town, bringing with it a living nightmare. The first people running from its edge scream about unseen monsters in the mysterious mist killing everything in sight, causing a large group of people to hole up in a store. From there they must fight off giant killer insects, huge tentacles attached to unseen creatures, and other terrible beasts.

Even worse, a blood thirsty fundamentalist woman starts a doomsday cult within the store, demanding the sacrifice of a child. This makes murder from other humans just as likely as death from the blood hungry residents of the mist. The surprise ending to this movie is one of the most shocking and stunning in horror movie history, and has already left millions of viewers utterly stunned.
