The Pillars of the Earth is Ken Follett´s masterwork. One man struggles to maintain an island of virtue and safety for the common people in a sea awash with brutish and self-serving lords in Medieval Europe. The story is set around the history of a grand cathedral, from its conception as one man´s dream to its eventual completion.

There are several heroic characters in the story. Most notable is Prior Philip, a young monk. At the story´s beginning, he is filled with promise and seems destined for a great part in God´s plan. His inexperience and naiveté, along with a little bit of self-pride, present him with obstacles along his path. Entering into agreements with men who put their own needs over those of the people, or of God, seems expedient to the young monk´s own righteous goals, but turns out to be disastrous at every turn.

The character development in Ken Follett´s The Pillars of the Earth is good. We understand the moral struggles of the lead characters and sympathize with their choices.
