Why You Should Be Five Minutes Early for Everything

Summary:
This 500-word blog entry lists several good reasons to be approximately five minutes early for everything from class to work to social gatherings.
Details or Sample:

Some people don’t think that being on time for meetings, family gatherings, or work is important. Others think that being exactly on time is good enough. In some casual situations, this is fine. But in many cases, you should try to be about five minutes early for the meeting, gathering or other event. Here are the best reasons for this seemingly-early arrival.

• You have a couple of minutes to assess the situation before the actual work begins. There will be time to get out your notebook, for example, or go grab a quick drink of water before the big boss walks in. Having a couple of minutes to settle in makes you more comfortable, which is almost always a good thing.

• If you’re slightly early, you’ll rarely be the last to arrive. Being last rarely makes a good impression. Being a little early shows that you’re committed to whatever you’re about to do – and that you care enough about the other people there to be punctual.

• Showing up even one minute late can distract people. If your boss is in the middle of an introductory speech when you arrive, you must sneak in and hope that nobody notices. If you’re five minutes early, the meeting has not yet started, so you don’t have this concern.

• Many people will notice the chronically-late person. Few will take any notice of you if you’re already there when they walk in. Though it’s perfectly natural to want to stand out and be noticed – especially if you’re trying to get a promotion at work – you don’t want to be noticed, or remembered, for things like lateness.

• Being five minutes early does not inconvenience other people. If you show up at a housewarming party half an hour early, your host(ess) must figure out how to entertain you while making last-minute preparations. But if you’re only five minutes early, the host(ess) is usually ready to welcome guests.

• You get better seats if you’re a few minutes early. If you have a preferred seat in the college classroom or the boardroom, being a little early gives you a better chance of getting that space.

• Small talk before the event can clue you in to all sorts of important things. If you have a few minutes to chat before the professor, boss or host(ess) walks in, you can make new friends with the other people. You might also learn something important – like why your boss called this meeting in the first place – if you’re early enough to chat with others.

Being just a few minutes early will change many things about your professional and persona life. If you continue to show up a bit early for events, other people will have a new, improved perception of you. They’ll begin to see you as a caring person: somebody who really cares about the event and wants to be there. This will help your personal and professional life, so give it a try.
