Green Odor Busters

You need your house to smell nice. You spray the sofa and carpet with something that claims to make odors disappear and empty the aerosol can of room deodorizer into the air. And the place does smell great for the next few hours. But do you know that you’ve just pumped your house full of chemicals that do things like coat your nasal passages with oils, deaden your sense of smell, and really don’t freshen the air at all but mask one odor with another?

Commercial deodorizers with their brew of sometimes caustic, asthma-causing and carcinogenic ingredients aren’t the only solution for your house’s B.O. problems. In addition to doing common sense things like cleaning up the messes that cause the odors, and letting in a little fresh air daily, here are a host of homemade green odor busters for you to try.

1. Aroma From Your Cupboard

- Place spices like cinnamon, cloves and ginger into cheesecloth bags and boil in an open pot.

- Dampen cotton balls with oil of wintergreen, vanilla, almond or other extracts, then place them around the house in inconspicuous places.

- Prepare spiced apple or cranberry cider and sweeten the smell of your house at the same time.

2. Citrus Fresheners

- Place slices of lemon, orange or grapefruit in a pot with enough water to cover and simmer, uncovered.

- Cut an orange, lemon or grapefruit in half, remove the insides, fill the hollow rind with salt and place in the room to be deodorized.

3. Versatile Vinegar

- Place shallow containers of vinegar around the room to neutralize odors.

- Boil one tablespoon of white vinegar in one cup of water to eliminate cooking odors.

- Make a homemade air freshener spray by using 8 oz. white vinegar and 20-30 drops of a fragrant essential oil. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and shake before using. The vinegar neutralizes odors and the vinegar smell soon disappears leaving the fragrance of the essential oil behind.
