It’s fun! It’s educational and it’s one of the hottest selling games of all time. But what of its roots; how did Scrabble come to be?

Alfred Masher Butts of Ploughkeepsie, New York was an architect who found himself in the unemployment line during the mid-1940s. Thinking he could invent a board game that would bring in money until he could find a job in his trade, he analyzed games that were already on the market. He found that board games generally fell into three categories: word games, move games and number games. He then chose to invent a game that included both skill and chance.

Butts chose to integrate anagrams with a crossword puzzle. He named the game Lexiko. The name was later changed to Criss-Cross Words.

When Butts tried to find a company to manufacture and distribute his game, he was faced with rejection at every turn. Then he met game-loving
