How to Enjoy Spring Break Without Depleting Your Bank Account

Ah, Spring Break. Those two words conjure up pictures of sun, surf, and, unfortunately, mounds of debt for the already-destitute college student. But spring break doesn"t have to break your wallet. Follow these tips for a trip that is both fun and affordable.
Travel in Numbers
The larger the group, the cheaper the cost. Contact a travel agency or check online for package deals. Keep in mind, though, that packages are not always the best bargain. Compare your findings with other alternatives before booking.
Rentals
Sometimes the price of renting a house or condominium for the week is much cheaper than renting a hotel by the night, especially when traveling in groups. Contact a realtor or check the classified section of a local newspaper for availability. Remember, though, that houses and condos are someone"s personal property. If you have visions of hanging from chandeliers, a home rental might not be right for you.
Pitch a Tent
While you won"t have the luxury of your own toilet, camping is the cheapest, and sometimes the most interesting, way to travel. All you need is a tent (about a hundred dollars) and a chair ($7.50). Campgrounds often offer pools, hot tubs, and restaurants on the premises. Many coastal resorts boast waterfront sites. The downfall? Bugs. Take loads of spray and citronella candles.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Flying is quick and costly; driving is long and cheap. If you need to save money, take to the road. To avoid boredom, share the drive and make the trip part of your vacation by stopping in interesting cities along the way. If you can"t drive, search the Internet for flights. Many travel sites offer fare watchers, which alert you when prices drop.
Eat In
Fast food adds up, so rent a room with a kitchenette and prepare your own breakfast and lunch. Bagels, bread, and deli meat will get you through to dinnertime.
Free Meals
Speaking of dinners, check out local bars and restaurants that offer happy hour drink prices along with free buffets. Okay, so it may sound tacky, but you can"t beat a five-dollar chicken wing and mozzarella stick dinner with drinks. Besides, so many restaurants offer up these specials that you can probably visit a new one each night.
