Cramps can be annoying and debilitating. Because various reasons for cramping exist, there are also different methods to relieve the cramps.

What are cramps?

“True” cramps typically occur in a single muscle or in areas where clusters of muscles work together. Night cramps, a type of true cramps, are also known as “rest cramps.” They often wake people up at night, interfering with good sleep. Although experts do not know for sure what causes such cramps, some experts believe that re-arranging one’s body in ways that shorten muscles might trigger cramps (MedicineNet).

Why do cramps occur? According to WebMD, there are many reasons.

1. True cramps are believed to be triggered by over stimulation of the nerves of the muscles. The best example of such over-stimulation is physical exercise. Playing sports, jogging, working out at the gym, and similar activities may so “excite” the muscles that cramps may result.

2. Dehydration can also cause night cramps. When one doesn’t drink enough liquids or perspires excessively, cramps can occur. The elderly in particular may suffer excessive night cramps with low fluid intake or fluid loss, especially in warmer climates.

3. Another common factor that may trigger night cramps is injury. As a built-in mode of protection, surrounding muscles near the injury might cramp or spasm to discourage movement of the injured body part.

4. Sodium, magnesium, and blood calcium deficits can lead to cramps.

How can cramps be relieved? Depending on the cause, according to MedicineNet and WebMD, there are multiple methods to relieve them.
