Doctor's Analysis: The Dangers of Tylenol

 (Best Offer)
Summary:
Although we think of over the counter medications as being relatively harmless, this isn´t always the case. Here´s what you need to know about the dangers of Tylenol.
Details or Sample:
We don’t always think of common, over the counter drugs as being dangerous. After all, if they’re sold without a prescription they must be safe. Right? Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. One of the most commonly used over the counter medications is acetaminophen sold under the brand name Tylenol. This inexpensive medication is used by an unsuspecting public for everything from fever to minor aches and pains. Most people will have no problems taking this medication if used in appropriate doses. But this isn’t the case for certain susceptible individuals and situations where higher than recommended dosages are used. What is the danger of Tylenol usage?

It may surprise you to learn that up to half of all cases of liver failure are a direct result of acetaminophen poisoning. When the liver is presented with a high dose of Tylenol or smaller doses over a lengthier time period, it may be unable to metabolize the medication completely. The unmetabolized drug may be converted to a toxic break down product which can cause liver cell damage and death. It’s rare that a person would take a dose of acetaminophen high enough to cause acute poisoning although occasionally high doses are taken during suicide attempts. Most liver damage occurs from taking smaller doses over a longer period of time. Symptoms of Tylenol poisoning include vomiting and abdominal pain. If these symptoms develop while taking Tylenol, you should seek immediate medical attention. If treated early, a drug called N-acetylcysteine can be used to counteract some of the damage.

Doctor’s Analysis:

With potential Tylenol dangers, should you use this medication for treatment of fever or common aches and pains? If you take the recommended dose for short periods of time in the absence of liver disease, Tylenol will probably not present a problem for you. If you’re an adult, you should never consume more than four grams of Tylenol per day and
