Getting Fit After the Baby

Summary:
While having a baby is a wonderful experience, it also means your body will be drastically changed. This article explains how to get fit and what to expect of your body after the baby.
Details or Sample:
The nine months of pregnancy are full of mixed emotions. On one hand, you´re excited about the new life you carry inside, but on the other hand . . . your body is stretching in odd places and you gain weight you aren´t sure you´ll lose! It can be worrying and many mothers to be are anxious to get back to their pre-baby shape.
It´s important to have realistic expectations once the baby is born. Your body won´t just snap back to perfection! In fact, you can expect it to take 12-18 months to get back to normal. That´s because your body has just performed an incredible job. Your skin has stretched, your bones have actually moved (hence the wider hips) and your organs need time to get back into position. Not to mention the stress on the lower back and pelvis from actually pushing that baby out!
That doesn´t mean you can´t be fit after your bundle of joy is born, though. You´ll need to ease back into things, since it will be at least 6 weeks before you are ready to do anything. Depending on the trauma of the birth and the individual, it can take up to 3 months to get back into exercise form.
You´ll need to get your doctor´s approval before you start a proper exercise routine again, but that shouldn´t stop you from getting some exercise with your little one. As long as you feel good, why not take your baby for a walk around the block? As you get stronger, walk further. Carrying your infant is excellent exercise and that, combined with walking, will help get your body back into shape.
Exercises to avoid include anything that works the abs, since they are usually quite vulnerable to damage for at least a couple of months after the birth. Also, if any exercise hurts, stop right away. Your main focus should be on looking after your little one and making a full recovery, so take it slowly.
Many new mothers find that they are simply too exhausted to exercise much that first year. If this is you, don´t worry too much. Going for regular walks, getting down and crawling around with your baby, and doing squats (once you are healed) are all good ways to burn some extra calories, and if you are watching what you eat, your weight should be back to normal by the end of the first year.
It´s pretty normal for new moms to pack around a few pounds for months after the baby arrives. While celebrities seem to drop their baby weight in a split second, that doesn´t mean everyone does. Don´t go to extremes, like starving yourself or pushing your body to do more than it can. You´ll lose the weight and get fit in due time, be patient and enjoy your baby.
