Computers are great tools for learning, research and just plain fun, but it is important for everyone who uses a computer to be aware of the danger of viruses and other malicious software. Over the years computer virus writers have become much more sophisticated, and with so many people putting their finances online the stakes have never been higher.

Fortunately there are some simple steps computer owners can take to protect themselves and their valuable personal information. Some vital steps all computer users need to take include:

ü Be very cautious about opening email attachments. These days a significant percentage of viruses are spread not through infected files but through infected email attachments. It pays to exercise caution when it comes to opening emails and email attachments. Look through your email carefully before opening it and delete any messages that appear to be spam immediately. When you receive an attachment be sure that you can verify the identity of the sender before opening any attachments.
ü Never connect to the internet without a virus scanning program in place. Studies have shown that a computer can be infected within 15 minutes of connecting to the internet. Running a computer online without a quality virus scanner in place is simply asking for trouble. Fortunately there are plenty of low cost antivirus programs on the market, from such names as Symantec, Norton and others. In addition, many internet service providers include online virus detection and protection services for their customers.
ü Keep your antivirus software up to date. Having antivirus software in place is only have the battle. The other half is keeping that antivirus software up to date. Virus writers are busy every single day creating new threats, and it is vital to keep your protection up to date. Most antivirus programs will provide an easy way to check for updates; be sure to download and install those updates on a regular basis. A good practice is to schedule updates for a time when the computer will not be in use, like the middle of the night. That way your PC stays protected and you can still get your important work done.
ü Run regular scans on your system. Even with the best antivirus software in place it is possible to get infected. That is why it is so important to regularly scan your PC for problems. As with software updates, these scans can be scheduled for the middle of the night or other times when the PC is unlikely to be in use.
