Berlin is home to several wondrous National Museums, each of which showcase fascinating collections from European and other cultural art works, ethnological works, and archeological works. For a small fee, visitors can find themselves enthralled for hours on end.
Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung or the Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection, located at the Altes Museum, is open Monday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. The Egyptian Museum features one of the finest collections of ancient Egyptian art including the portrait of Queen Tiy and the bust of Queen Nefertiti.
Antikensammlung or the Collection of Classical Antiquities is located at the Altes Museum as well as the Pergammonmuseum. It showcases the architectural remains, vases, sculptures, mosaics, inscriptions, and jewelry from ancient Greek and Roman times. Its doors are open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm and on Thursday from 10 am to 10 pm.
Ethnologishes Museum or the Museum of Ethnology is situated at Amimallee 27. More than 500,000 pieces of pre-industrial cultural works are housed here including photographs, sound recordings, and films. The museum is open to the public Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm and Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm.
Gemäldegalerie or the Picture Gallery is located at Stauffenbergergstraße 40. Founded in 1830, this collection includes fine examples of European art gleaned from the 13th to 18th centuries. Such famous artists as Rembrandt, Rubens, Tizian, Raphael, Vermeer, and Bruegel are represented here. Its doors are open to the public on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm and on Thursday from 10 am to 10 pm.
Kunstbibliothek or the Art Library, found at Matthäikirchplatz 6, specializes in literature that focuses on the history of art. It is open from 10 am to 6 pm on Tuesday through Friday, 11 am to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Kunstgewerbemuseum or the Museum of Decorative Arts, located at Tiergartenstraße 6, showcases a fine collection that includes costumes, tapestries, furniture, wainscots, glass vessels, silver, and gold. It is open from 10 am to 6 pm on Tuesday through Friday, 11 am to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Kupferstichkabinett- Sammlung der Zeichnungen und Druckgraphik or the Museum of Prints and Drawings, located at Matthäikirchplatz 6, showcases the largest collection of graphic art currently in Germany. It includes more than 110,000 drawings and 500,000 prints, as well as pastels, watercolours, and oil sketches. Its doors open to the public on Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm and from 11 am to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Münzkabinett or the Numismatic Collection is located at Bodestraße 1-3. This collection includes a large array of coins that date back as early as the seventh century BC in Asia Minor.
Museum Europäischer Kulturen or the Museum of European Cultures is located at Im Winkel 6/8. It houses one of the largest collections of works featuring European cultural history. It is expected to be closed for renovations for some time after the autumn of 2008.
Museum für Indische Kunst or the Museum of Indian Art has been joined with the Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst or the Museum of East Asian Art. They are now referred to as the Museum of Asian Art. Together, they showcase a comprehensive collection of Indo-Asian cultural artwork.
Museum für Islamische Kunst or the Museum of Islamic Art is located in the south wing of the Pergamonmuseum. It showcases artworks from the eighth to the nineteenth century gleaned from countries from Spain to India. However, the primary focus rests on the Middle East.
Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte or the Museum for Pre- and Early History is located at Schloss Charlottenburg. It features an expansive collection of pieces taken from prehistoric cultures in the Ancient Near East and Europe. The collections include pieces through the Middle Ages. It is open from 9 am to 5 pm on Tuesday through Friday, 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Nationalgalerie or the National Gallery is spread among the Old National Gallery, the New National Gallery, the Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum für Gegenwart, and Friedrichswerder Church.
Alte Nationalgalerie or the Old National Gallery, located at Bodestrasse 1-3, showcases 19th century paintings and sculptures. The Old National Gallery has been listed among other museums in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. Its doors are open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm and on Thursday from 10 am to 10 pm.
Friedrichswerdersche Kirche or the Friedrichswerder Church is located at Werderscher Markt. It is open Monday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. Many early 19th century sculptures are on display at this location.
Neue Nationalgalerie or the New National Gallery, located at Potsdamer Straße 50, often features special exhibits throughout the year. Some of the famous works that are housed here include those from Klee, Munch, Dix, Picasso, Kirchner, and Kokoschka. Typically, this museum has hours on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 am to 6 pm, Thursday from 10 am to 10 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 8 pm.
Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum für Gegenwart- Berlin or the Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum for the Present- Berlin is located at Invalidenstrasse 50-51. The contemporary art housed here in a former railway station is some of the finest. This museum also houses the collection of Friedrich Christian Flick that encompasses approximately 2,000 artistic works. While the collection is primarily focused on North American and European artists, others are also reflected here. It is open from 10 am to 6 pm on Tuesday through Friday, 11 am to 10 pm on Saturday, and 11 am to 6 pm on Sunday.
Sammlung Berggruen “Picasso und seine Zeit” or the Berggruen Museum/ Picasso and his Time is located at Schlossstraße 1. It is open on Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.
Skulpturensammlung und Museum für Byzantinische Kunst or the Sculpture Collection and Museum of Byzantine Art is located at Bodestraße 1-3. Its doors are open to the public.
Vorderasiatisches Museum or the Museum of Ancient Near East, located at Bodestraße 1-3, houses many fine examples of ancient oriental treasures. It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.
