The Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall was constructed in 1961. Before that people who lived in East and West Berlin could move freely from East to West and back. Many of these people were drawn to the West because of its prosperity.

The authorities of East Berlin decided the border between the East and West should be closed to prohibit 20,000 East Germans per month from moving to the West. The official announcement called the Berlin Wall an “antifascist protection barrier.” On August 13, 1961, the day after the decision was made to close the border, Berliners awoke to find barbed wire dividing the city. The Holocaust Memorial

The City of Berlin dedicated the Holocaust Memorial on the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII and the fall of the Nazi regime. The Memorial was erected in May 2005, to commemorate the mass murder of six million European Jews by Adolph Hitler and his army.

The first proposal for the Holocaust Memorial occurred in 1988. It was not approved until 11 years later. In 1999, approval was given for the controversial design that was submitted by Peter Eiseman, a US architect.
