Liverpool – European City of Culture

Summary:
2008 is an exciting year for Liverpool. Many new initiatives are coming to fruition in its year as the European City of Culture. This means there will be much more for visitors to enjoy - great food alongside much more, including history, architecture, music and Beatles memorabilia.
Details or Sample:
This year is a good time to visit Liverpool in the north of England. The town is celebrating being the European City of Culture for 2008. It is the only UK city to achieve the title since the initiative was set up 1985, when the former title of Capital of Culture went to Athens. This is not the first time Liverpool has led the way for the UK in international initiatives. In 1984, the International Garden Festival was held there – another first for Britain.

Parts of the city have also been designated a UNESCO Maritime Mercantile City World Heritage Site. This puts it in the company of some 850 other World Heritage Sites, which include the likes of The Great Wall of China and The Pyramids of Giza. Liverpool’s site area covers the docklands and The Pier Head where the ferry crosses the River Mersey, and stretches uphill as far as St George’s Hall and Lime Street.

A number of heritage trails have been developed to guide visitors around the Heritage Site districts, pointing out the various items of interest. A cycle trail is also available. Most of the walking trails are themed, so for example, you could choose to walk “Museum to Museum - Culture and Commerce”, or “Home of the Beatles”, or the “Walk of Faith” which takes in the famous cathedrals as well as lesser known aspects of religious life in the city.

Built on top of St James Mount, Liverpool’s unusual red brick Anglican Cathedral proclaims its existence for miles around. It is the largest cathedral in the UK and its Gothic arches are the highest and widest in the world. Enter through its great portal and feel your own insignificance inside the soaring architecture dedicated to God. Take the two elevators to the bell tower, and climb the 108 steps to the platform at the top of the Vestey Tower, for a birds’ eye view of the area from 500 ft above sea level.

You’ll see plenty of history conserved on the heritage trails, and plenty of new development as well. Not far from the famous buildings at the Pier Head – The Royal Liver, Cunard and Port of Liverpool Buildings – is ACC Liverpool, a brand new, massive concert and exhibition venue. Designed to produce very lowCO2 emissions, to collect rainwater and have its own wind farm, this is a grand example of how to build a really environmentally-friendly structure.

Next door is The Albert Dock Conservation Area, which has been tastefully preserved to house the Tate Liverpool gallery, the Merseyside Maritime Museum and the Beatles Story museum, as well as restaurants, retail outlets and other businesses.

Liverpool is proud to have been the birth place of the Beatles and offers many ways to rub shoulders with the famous four. Former homes of John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney are open for viewing. You can even follow your visit to their Story with a tour in the Yellow Duckmarine. Your Duck will be one of the World War II landing vehicles in a new incarnation, decorated and painted like the Yellow Submarine of the famous song.

As the day draws to a close, you have many restaurants, pubs, and clubs, and four theaters to choose from. This year has seen the opening of the Panoramic Restaurant, the highest in the country, on the 34th floor of the Beecham West Tower in Brook Street, below its luxury penthouse apartments. Here, as the name implies, you’ll have a 360 degree view of the city and its surroundings.

Of course, if you’re a Beatles fan, you can’t leave Liverpool without a visit to the famous Cavern Club in Matthews Street, where the rock phenomenon began. Beatles related events take place here throughout the year.

And in August 2008, the European City of Culture is holding The Beatle Week Festival. There will be a one day convention at the Adelphi Hotel and many other related events. A free evening festival outside The Cavern in Mattthew Street will have 200 bands playing different kinds of music. It’s expected to attract over 200,000 people. Liverpool is definitely the place to visit this summer.
