Vienna, Austria was hit by the Black Death in 1679. Today it is believed that the Black Death was the bubonic plague, which is carried by fleas that live on rats and other rodents. Vienna was literally crippled by the plague and in 1680, it returned with a vengeance, claiming the lives of approximately 76,000 people.

At this time Vienna was a major training center between east and west. Located on the Danube River, Vienna suffered from major plague outbreaks from the 14th century onward. Because the traffic on the Danube was so great, it’s now believed that this contributed to the spread of the Black Death.

Vienna was densely populated at this time and had no drainage or sewer system. The streets were filled with rotting household garbage, which contributed to a high population of rats and rodents. People would literally dump their household waste on the streets and warehouses would store grain and other items for months on end, which also attracted rats and rodents. Vienna was hit by the Black Death so frequently that other countries dubbed the plague “Viennese Death.”
