Great Cat Toys for Your Favorite Fur Ball

Summary:
This 640-word article discusses the best types of cat toys for various kitty personalities. Shopping for cat toys will be so much easier when you know what your cat is most likely to enjoy.
Details or Sample:

Most cats love to play, but each kitty is different. The energetic kitten might love the laser pointer, whereas your older, more-reserved cat ignores the red dot. Here are some great suggestions for cat toys – and the types of cats who prefer each toy the most.

Laser pointers are great for active cats that enjoy chasing down their prey. You have to be careful with a laser because you can wear out your cat. When he starts to show signs of being tired, put away the toy and let him rest. But as long as your fur ball is ready to play, you can encourage him to run up and down the hallway, all over the couch, et cetera. He’ll even jump up and try to catch the dot if you slowly run the beam up the refrigerator door!

This type of cat also likes balls – especially rubber ones that ricochet all over the room when you bounce them off the floor. Make sure that your room is free of breakables so that your excited housecat doesn’t destroy a vase on his quest to catch the ball on a bounce.

Feather toys are also great for active cats. Energetic cats who can’t be bothered to run much – the kitties who are more into wrestling-type play, that is – also enjoy feather toys. This type of toy is highly interactive if you want it to be. You can get a feather toy on a stick and get almost as much exercise as your kitties get when you wave it around for them to catch.

Less-active cats, however, are not usually swayed by toys that require them to actually get up. You can still play with these kitties, though. If they can be bothered to work for treats, get a “treat ball.” Fill this little ball with kitty treats and roll it across the floor. The lazy housecat will soon figure out that the ball coughs up treats. He’ll roll it across your kitchen or living room all afternoon if there’s food involved.

For the curious kitty who likes surprises, try one of the many unpredictable, random toys. Some toy mice, for example, zig-zag across the floor. Toys with lights might flash randomly. These types of toys keep the curious kitty’s attention as he tries to figure out what’s happening – and how to best catch the toy.

These fur balls also benefit from hide-and-seek type of toys. Get a cat tunnel, or just put out clean paper bags. Your cats will enjoy hiding in the enclosed spot, waiting to pounce on each other.

These aren’t the only types of cat toys on the market, of course. Many cats – regardless of their personality – enjoy stuffed toys. Get a small mouse that makes a somewhat-realistic squeaking sound when your cat paws at it. This can entertain even a lazy kitty for half an hour or more.

You can also get stationary toys, such as the “ring racer.” This toy is basically a plastic ring with a moving ball trapped inside the track. A curious cat might spend an afternoon trying to figure out how to release the trapped ball. A lazy cat could sit on top of the track and paw at the ball. A hyperactive kitten will often try to crawl through the ring to attack the ball.

Finding toys that suit your cat’s personality isn’t too difficult once you figure out which toys are best for the personalities in your household. If you end up with a toy that none of your cats like, which is sometimes going to happen, you can always donate that unwanted plaything to your local animal shelter. The kitties there will be happy to entertain themselves with the unwanted squeaky mouse or feather toy while they’re waiting for somebody to give them a new home.
