Making a Difference for $20 or Less

College students, part-time workers, retirees – if you count yourself among any of these groups, this article is written for you. You probably have a little bit of time on your hands, and would like to help others in their spare time, but you are limited by a lack of funds. Those of you who can spare the time to volunteer often cannot commit to a regular schedule or would rather do your own projects when convenient.

1.) Donating books to after-school programs, domestic violence shelters and to organizations that work with homeless children is a great option. Go online or to the phonebook and look for organizations like these. Then go to your local library and see if they have books for sale. Often they do, and they range from 25 cents to one or two dollars. The added bonus here is that you not only help a local charity, but you also help your local library raise some much-needed funds.

2.) Consider using GoodSearch, which is a search engine powered by Yahoo. Go to the site, set it as your home page, and use it each time you need to find a website or some new information. Choose the charity or school of your choice with from a tool on the main page, and when you search or even shop online; GoodSearch donates money to your chosen organization. Total price: Free.

3.) Never throw out your old clothes, shoes, or furniture. If you are moving into or out of a dorm, or moving to a smaller home to save money, you’ll inevitably be tossing out some things. You’ll help others who could benefit from free or cheap second-hand items, and you’ll save yourself the expense of putting your things in storage. The Salvation Army accepts many items, as does PlanetAid, which has yellow donation bins in many cities. There are numerous other charities that are more than happy to take old items off your hands. Some will even schedule a pickup at your home. Clothes that are not used in America are sometimes sent to developing countries. You may think your old shoes are junk, but they may be very valuable to someone who cannot afford their own. Get a receipt for your donations by talking with the charity and figuring out a ballpark figure for the value of your items. Save the receipt for tax time. Total price for you: Free (perhaps even a tax deduction!)

4.) Conduct a bake sale. These can be fun for your and your friends to organize! First, call the organization and ask to speak to the person in charge of Fundraising. Let this person know what your plans are. Set up a table at a county fair, church fair, or other outdoor event, once you’ve received permission from the organizers. Tell them it is for charity. A yard sale is another option that works great because it can be held on a weekend right in your own driveway, and your friends probably have things they wouldn’t mind selling off as well. Lastly, send the money you earn as a check to the charity of your choice.

5.) Volunteer for one evening at a community theatre .....continued
