Gone are the days when musicians were forced to deal with record labels, music publishers, and music studios. The digital age has brought near professional tools to the masses, enabling church music ministers to self publish their music and share the gospel worldwide.

Worship leaders can pen a song and share it with believers and unbelievers across the world using their own computers, software, microphones and cables. They can record CDs to give away or sell at concerts. And they can release their music as digital files which can be downloaded immediately on the Internet.

Gone are the restrictions of the vinyl record days. Songwriters are no longer at the mercy of a cadre of music industry professionals to arrange, perform, record, promote, distribute and sell their creations. Now songwriters themselves are experimenting with recording software, audio interfaces, and mixers. They are selling their own music at concerts and online. They are in control of the entire creative process, ensuring the end-product is as they intend.

What a glorious prospect for those called to create new music sharing the good news about Godīs love and mercy. What a glorious opportunity to share music that is un-compromised -- music that shines as a light in dark places because it acknowledges Jesus as Lord and Savior.

If you have some music you want to record, but donīt want to pay a studio, check this very basic home-recording setup. To be sure, there are lots of other options -- more professional-sounding, costly and ... confusing. This keeps it simple and gets you started:

* Macintosh computer with a CD burner, Garageband and ITunes software
I use the MacBook Pro, which has an 1/8" jack for audio input. If you are purchasing a computer, be sure it has sound recording capabilities, it can accept full audio input from your keyboard or other musical instrument and can use a plug-in microphone. It may also have a built-in microphone, which you can experiment with. Garageband is part of ILife software series updated annually and it may come bundled with your Mac, but is also can be purchased separately. ITunes can be downloaded online for free.

* Keyboard, such as my Yamaha PSR 1100, an arranger keyboard with headphone jack
Be sure your keyboard has an audio out line to connect with your computer. A midi connection will bring over the notes which can be assigned to a software instrument on your computer, but it will not suffice for a full audio recording. My setup wouldnīt work until I used the headphone jack to connect to my computer, so check your audio out jacks and headphone jack to see what works with your equipment.
