Just the mention of buried treasure conjures up images of gold doubloons crammed into a pirateīs chest. Itīs a sure-fire party idea which will make little eyes dance. But why not be creative and plan an adventure which will teach them about God?

Captivate your childrenīs imaginations -- and hearts -- by searching for sand dollars, the popular sea creature related to the sea urchin and starfish. You can then share The Legend of the Sand Dollar, telling them about Jesusī life and death for our salvation.

The legend, written by an unknown author, is repeatedly shared on the Internet and in gift shops where sand dollars and their artifacts are sold. There are at least four versions, but the gist is this: Four holes represent the wounds made by nails when Jesus was crucified, the fifth hole the wound made when Jesus was pierced by a Roman soldier. On one side is an Easter lily, but in the center is a star symbolizing the one which drew three wise men to worship Jesus shortly after his birth. On the other side is a Christmas poinsettia. If you break open the sand dollar, there will be what looks like five white doves, supposedly waiting to spread good will and peace.

Before you make the trek to the nearest shore, do a little planning. The best time to find sand dollars is during low tide, especially after a storm when the beach is not crowded. Look near a sand bar, if possible.

Check for rules about what you are free to take. White or off-white sand dollars actually are skeletons bleached by sunlight. Live sand dollars may be purplish- black in color and appear hairy. Taking the lives ones may be forbidden or restricted; expect a stench if you do!
