· Use a reliable agency with a proven history of providing respectable nannies. Ask about past legal issues and check with the Better Business Bureau.
· Make sure that you complete a background check including a criminal check, sex offender check, and driving record check. If the candidate provides you with a copy of these reports, make sure that they are current and up to date.
· Read any documentation that is provided on the individuals whom you are considering.
· Interview each candidate. Ideally, you should interview candidates whom you are considering hiring more than once.
· Contact more than one reference for each potential nanny. Have a list of questions ready so that you ask pertinent ones.
The final and possibly one of the most important facets of hiring a nanny for your children is to rely on your instincts. If the individual makes you at all wary of her ability to care for your children properly, do not hire her. In fact, you can set up a trial and have your potential nanny spend some time with your children and gauge their reaction before hiring her.
