Exercise can help with the pain and swelling. Most arthritis sufferers are reluctant to exercise because of the pain that they experience but exercise can actually help alleviate the pain. Strength exercises and stretching can be especially helpful to those suffering from arthritis since it can help improve flexibility, movement and reduce stiffness. Consult your physician regarding proper exercise. A form of physical therapy may be beneficial. Alternating cold and warm compresses on the affected joint or joints can help relieve pain and swelling.
