It is so easy to melt chocolate, and you can do so many delicious things with it. You can melt chocolate in a microwave for about 15 seconds, or in a bowl over gently simmering water, which takes longer. However you melt it, once you have that lovely silky substance, you can let your imagination run riot.
Additional liquids like cream (make chocolate sauce), caramel or other flavoring, and liqueurs should be added to the block chocolate so it can all be melted together. Never add a liquid to chocolate that is already melted, as it will harden immediately.
Which chocolate will you melt? You can use any hard chocolate, from supermarket cooking chocolate to high quality chocolate from a specialty shop. You can use white, milk or dark chocolate. You can melt the different shades together and lightly blend them to produce your own marbled chocolate.
The best part is turning your melted chocolate into delicious confections. One of the simplest ways to use it is to whip a tablespoon into a cup of hot milk. Use a cinnamon stick to whisk it, and you will have a delicious cold weather nightcap.
Melt your chocolate with a spoonful of mint or other flavored liqueur and set in molds to make delicious after dinner treats. These can also be wrapped and presented in a pretty box to make hostess gifts, or to take to a shower.
Making your own delicious chocolate candy bars is fun and easy. You can customize your own candy bars to include ingredients that suit your own taste. Start with something simple - add a tablespoon of dried or grated coconut to a cupful of melted chocolate to create Coconut Rough. Drop spoonfuls onto a greased slide, or drop the spoonfuls close to each other to make bars.
From this simple base you can other exciting flavors. Add chopped glace cherries to the melted chocolate and coconut to make Cherry Coconut Bars. Add chopped chandied pineapple to make Pina Colada Bars.
Candied ginger and sultanas are a marvelous combination with chocolate. Simply roughly chop the candied ginger and stir into the melted chocolate with sultanas. Drop spoonfuls on a greased slide or into chocolate molds to make rough clusters. These are beautiful served with wine at the end of a meal.
Most commercial chocolate candy bars only contain a limited number of fruits and nuts. When you make you own, you can create exciting new combinations. How about almonds and chopped dried apricot? Pecans and Paw Paws? Cashews and pineapple. You can be so much more creative when you make your own.
But dried fruit and nuts are only some of the delicacies you can use. For a children´s party, you can make chocolate candy apples. Buy or make candy apples on sticks and dip them into thick melted chocolate and coat well. When the chocolate starts to set, turn the candy apples upside down to set on a greased slide. Before you do that, while the chocolate is still wet, you can dip them into hundreds and thousands or chocolate dollars for even more pizazz.
Fresh whole cherries and grapes dipped in melted chocolate and left to set are a lovely treat for after dinner, or to take to a shower. Serve them on an elegant plate with fresh lemonade for a lovely summertime treat.
For a strawberry tea with a difference, dip whole sweet strawberries into chocolate and leave to set. Serve them on pretty china plates with a dollop of cream and serve them with cream wafer cookies and Earl Grey tea.
