Five Ways to Garden for Less

As you plan your garden, with lists of all the plants you want to try this year and new tools you need, one fact stands out. It all costs money! If you are like most of us, you are tightening your purse strings. Try some of these five ways to create a great garden for less money:

Go Green

Organic methods are not only more wholesome—they are cheaper. For instance, you can kill weeds and have some child-like fun at the same time by spraying them with vinegar from a squirt gun. Always try the simple organic solutions to problems before you buy an expensive product.

Composting turns the grass clippings, raked leaves, and other vegetable refuse that would burden the community landfill into fertile soil. You save on fertilizer and hauling fees and will have a better garden. A simple heap compost pile works as well as expensive containers.

Your library has lots of books on organic methods. Ruth Stout wrote about “no work gardening” many years ago, and her ideas are still worth trying. Ruth was an expert at saving time and effort as well as money.

Start Plants from Seed

With so many blooming annuals and ready-to-bear vegetables at the garden center, you may have forgotten about starting seeds. But if you have good light, so your plants don’t get spindly, you can save a bundle. On the other hand, if you don’t have good light, buying and running grow lights can easily eat up any savings.

You needn’t buy peat pots. Small seeds can be started in an egg carton. Larger seeds will grow their hearts out in paper cups. Just be sure you have a cookie sheet or other tray beneath them.

Zucchini and other summer squash, pumpkins, and marigolds are easy to grow from seed.
